Skin Prep Before Makeup
You have an event that you are headed to and your makeup needs to look flawless. Look no further because we're going to give you the lowdown on all the necessary skincare steps you'll need to make sure your makeup lasts through the day and night.
We've all been there, you've spent an enormous amount of time preparing your flawless look only to have your makeup seem to be melting off by the end of the day. But, did you really take the time to make sure you have a perfect skin base with skin prep and getting your skin ready for your makeup? Just like art, the canvas needs prep in order for the paint to look its best.
Prepping The Skin Is The Key To Flawless Makeup?
Professional makeup artists agree that prepping your skin is essential for a flawless makeup look. Excess oils and dry skin need to be removed, and a hydrated, dewy base will give you the glow you're after. Dead skin cells? No thanks!
Here are The Steps to Prep
One: Cleanse The Skin
Cleansing the skin will soften and lift excess sebum and oil, it will hydrate dry patches so dead skin cells can be eliminated effortlessly.
An oil cleanser like the Amor or Pura Cleansing Oil binds to excess toxins, unclogs sebum from pores, and removes dead skin, makeup, and dirt leaving behind a smooth complexion. Follow with the Soothing Cream Cleanser using gentle circular motions to rinse away any left-behind impurities.
Two: Exfoliate
When is the last time you exfoliated your facial skin? Every time you exfoliate your body you know how amazingly soft it felt? Your face needs to feel like that too. Dry skin tends to flake so exfoliating flakes away will leave you with a smooth skin canvas that will help makeup stay in place all day.
After cleansing the skin, use your favourite exfoliating product to gently massage the skin. Exfoliation lifts dead flakes from the surface. Rinse thoroughly using lukewarm water and avoid vigorous rubbing to eliminate any redness you may experience.
Sensitive skin users be careful to not use harsh exfoliators. Always avoid the eye area.
Three: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Toners and mists are often thought of as the one product that can be skipped in your skincare routine but, skin prep for makeup, they are a must. Mists can replenish the moisture from your cleanse and calm the skin while resetting your pH. A toner will prep the skin and allow deeper penetration of your serums into the skin. Your moisturizer will also work more efficiently.
Toners can be sprayed directly onto the skin and pat into with your hands. Alternatively, you can apply a small amount onto a cotton pad and swipe the product all over your face and neck area.
Four: Hydrating Serum
DO NOT PASS GO...Ok, we're not playing Monopoly but we are telling you that you cannot skip the serum.
Makeup that needs to stay put all day, needs hydrated plump skin from within. We do not want your makeup to fall into those little creeks and valleys we like to call fine lines and creases.
Our 3D Dew Drops is the perfect blend of 3 molecular weights of hyaluronic acid to plump the skin and fill the fine lines for a more youthful appearance.
Take half a syringe and apply all over the face and neck area. Do not let this dry between steps.
Five: Moisturize
Moisturizing the skin creates an occlusive barrier for your hydrating serum. Keeping your skin hydrated throughout the day is essential to your makeup staying in place.
Apply this immediately after your serum to damp skin. It will eliminate any tight and dry feeling instead leaving it feeling plump and hydrated. Use a pea-sized amount of product all over the face, or use a little extra on the neck and chest area to create a consistent look.
Six: Kissable Lips
Are your lips feeling dry and cracked? Lips are part of the whole pre-makeup prep step so if your lips are in need of a refresher, smooth over your favourite lip balm and dab a little sugar on top.
Scrub in gentle circular patterns until you feel like your lips are smooth to the touch. Rinse clean and add your favourite lip balm again. Ativo has 6 delectable scents to choose from.
Seven: Primer
Choosing the right primer to achieve a long lasting look all day is essential while choosing one that is specifically made for your skin type is also a must.
Do you want a matte finish, radiant glow or a day time natural finish? Here are some of our favourite primers.
- Milk Hydro Grip Hydrating Makeup Primer - This product is 94% natural, vegan, clean, cruelty-free, paraben-free, silicone-free, oil-free, fragrance-free, and gluten-free.
- Tatcha The Silk Canvas Filter Finish Protective Primer- Formulated without: Parabens, synthetic fragrances, mineral oil, sulfate detergents, phthalates, urea, DEA or TEA.
- Elf Poreless Putty Primer and Matte Putty Primer - There is no information about ingredient safety available on their website.
Six: Apply your makeup.
Setting It All In Place
Congrats! Now that you've created your make up masterpiece, you'll need to set it all in place with a setting spray or setting powder. Choosing which to use depends on the look you are creating.
Need a matte look? Choose a setting powder like the Huda Beauty Easy Bake Loose Baking & Setting Powder
Need a dewy finish? Choose a translucent powder followed by a setting spray like Mac Prep and Prime Fix Plus.
Keeping it fresh all day!
Since you've created the perfect canvas and did the makeup prep, you'll minimize the amount of times you'll need to reach into your bag to reapply your makeup.
Still noticing dryness throughout the day? Just spritz a little of your setting spray for a quick refresh. For oily skin we recommend keeping some blotting papers on hand to absorb that excess oil. Applying powder over oil can lead to a cakey look which we need to avoid.
